ABOUT Neuromodulators INJECTIONS

Neuromodulators, such as Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin are injectable and designed for reducing and removing small and big wrinkles on the face. Botox injections block certain chemical signals from nerves, mostly signals that cause muscles to contract. The most common use of these injections is to temporarily relax the facial muscles that cause wrinkles mostly in the forehead and around the eyes.

All neuromodulators are derived from Botulinum toxin. Differences between various brands are due to accessory proteins that surround toxin molecules. Some research has shown that accessory proteins can actually contribute to allergic reactions and building resistance from the body towards neurotoxin, where, with time, a client needs bigger dosages to achieve the same results.

Resistance towards neurotoxin is rare, and if it develops, a switch to a different neuromodulator usually fixes the problems.

Different brands of Neuromodulators

Botox® (onabotulinumtoxinA), Dysport® (abobotulinumtoxinA), and Xeomin® (incobotulinumtoxinA) are FDA approved and Health Canada approved for treatments of forehead lines between brows also known as the “11s.”

Botox®

Has the most of the complexing proteins.
Takes up to 14 days to kick in
Gives a stronger finish
Does not migrate, up to 1cm

Dysport®

The molecule of botulinum toxin is surrounded by complexing proteins
Kicks in 3 to 10 days
Gives a softer, more natural finish
Can migrate and disperse further from the injection site

How long do neuromodulators last?

On average, it takes up to 2 weeks for a full effect of the neuromodulator to take place. It is important to know that the neuromodulator acts for 3-4 months, which then can gradually be dissolved from the body.

Disclaimer: It is very important to come for a follow-up appointment 2 weeks after the injection is performed to evaluate whether any touch-ups are needed.
Other uses for Botulinum neurotoxins: hyperhidrosis, dystonia of neck spasms, muscle stiffness and spasms, headaches, to relax joints and improve circulation.
